The Townsville RSL kindly sponsored the North Queensland Flyfishers Veterans’ Come and Try Day. On 6th December 2012 the Club held the Veterans’ Day at the Rowes Bay Golf Club. Nineteen soldiers and the supporting staff of the Lavarack Barracks Solder Recovery Centre gathered for the activity supported by eight Members of the Club. The Veterans had a range of both physical and mental health issues to differing degrees and the activities were tailored to meet a range of injuries.
The day included an introduction to the sport of fly fishing, some theory and casting tuition. Fishing in the Golf Club ponds followed with most Veterans catching fish. The day included a BBQ lunch. The feedback from the participants on the day was most complimentary.
The activity certainly met our aim of assisting veterans gain an experience in the sport and it provided them with a welcome relief from their day to day rehabilitation and the issues and challenges that they are currently facing.
